Experience Unbelievable Fun With Puerto Rico Scuba Diving
Puerto Rico scuba diving should be at the top of your list of vacation diving destinations. Puerto Rico basks in the northeastern Caribbean Sea, east of the Dominican Republic and west of the Virgin Islands. It is approximately 1,000 miles from Florida's south coast. The country actually comprises smaller islands and keys, the largest of which are Mona, Vieques, and Culebra. The island is an unincorporated territory of the U.S.
As with any island in the Caribbean, the scenery is unbelievable, both above and below the water. Puerto Rico is a rather large island, measuring approximately 100 miles long and 35 miles wide. This size, along with changing geography, divide the Puerto Rico scuba diving locations into five general areas.
Area 1 comprises the North and East of the island. The north coast experiences northerly swells and therefore has few dive sites. The more protected east side has easier diving with gently sloping sandy bottoms and excellent reefs. Only experienced Puerto Rico scuba diving persons should attempt the north coast.
The island of Culebra is located in Area 2. Dive companies in San Juan and on the east coast make occasional trips to Culebra, but the ride to this Puerto Rico scuba diving location is about 2 hours by boat. Such trips are usually by special arrangement only.
The island of Vieques and the Southeast coast are located in Area 3. Puerto Rico scuba diving in Vieques means less divers and uncrowded and undamaged reefs. Inexpensive ferry services allow you to arrive in the morning, make a one or two dives, and return in the evening. Expect shallow sloping bottoms with round coral islands in relatively shallow water.
Puerto Rico scuba diving in the South Area (Area 4) contains the South Wall. It is easily accessible by dive boat. Protected by the island to the north, this area is quickly becoming recognized as one of the premier scuba diving spots.
The western offshore islands of Desecheo and Mona have been described as the crown jewels of Puerto Rico scuba diving. Desecheo is the more accessible location, but you must wait for calm diving conditions. This island claims to have one of the healthiest reef systems in the Caribbean, as well as the clearest waters. Mona has been described as having treacherous weather, requiring advanced planning (which might still be ruined by Mother Nature).
There is a Puerto Rico scuba diving option for divers of all levels of experience. Experienced divers might hazard the swells of the North Coast or the weather tantrums of Mona Island. Beginners might stick to the South Coast because it is protected by the bulk of the island itself. Whichever diving zone you choose, your Puerto Rico scuba diving adventure will be spectacular.
